This weekend we had the first rehearsals for my staged reading on August 7. We'd cast three men and two women.
On Saturday morning, my director gave me a call to report that one of the men had a family crisis and wouldn't be able to make the rehearsal that day. Moreover, from the tone of the actor's voice, my director guessed that we would need to re-cast.
We had the rehearsal from 12-3. One of the remaining men seemed really grumpy, but since he was playing a grumpy character, we figured he was just acting.
Well, it turns out that he wasn't. A few hours after the rehearsal, he sent an email saying he was backing out of the reading, on the grounds that he "felt no connection with the script".
So by Saturday evening, we were down to one man and two women.
Fortunately, we managed to re-cast one of the roles by Sunday evening, and in the worst case, my director can fill in for the other role.
